Since most people spend the majority of their time indoors, indoor air quality and home humidity is critical for both health and comfort. Humidity is the amount of water vapour found in the air.
Having consistently high humidity levels can cause moisture problems, which lead to the growth of mold and mildew.Â
SIGNS THAT THE HUMIDITY LEVEL IN YOUR HOME IS TOO HIGH
If you notice any of the following, it may be time to invest in a good quality dehumidifier for your home:
- Musty odors in basement and crawl spaces
- Increased allergy symptoms
- Mold growth found throughout your home
- A general sense of sticky/muggy indoor air
- Visible window condensation and water staining
- Wallpaper peeling or paint blistering
DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEHUMIDIFIERS
Here are a few examples of the different types of humidifiers to choose from:
- Portable Dehumidifiers:Â Portable dehumidifiers are the most cost-effective type of dehumidifier. They are often inexpensive and lightweight, making them easily movable from one room to another.
- Whole-House Dehumidifiers: A whole house dehumidifier is a centralized unit that works much like an air conditioner, removing humidity from your entire home. They require installation by a professional and are connected to your home’s existing ductwork.
- Desiccant Dehumidifiers:Â With a desiccant dehumidifier, the refrigeration portion of the process is removed. Instead of cooling the air to remove moisture, a chemical drying agent is used. This agent, or desiccant, absorbs moisture from the air before it is forced back out through your vents.
- Refrigerator Style Dehumidifiers:Â With a refrigerator style dehumidifier, moisture is removed by cooling the air. A fan pushes the air over a set of coils that cool the air, which makes the moisture in it condense and collect into a water collection tank. Then, the dry air, which has been cooled, is blown back into the ambient space by a fan.
